It will be interesting to note the genesis of the Department of Lifelong Learning. It originated from the Centre for Adult and Continuing Education. The Centre was established in 1986 for carrying out not only extension activities but also offered a programme on M.A Adult and Continuing Education. In the academic year 2009-2010, the centre was named as the Department of Adult and Continuing Education as per the guidelines of U.G.C. This department was renamed as the Department of Lifelong Learning in the academic year 2011-2012. It has been functioning as a full-fledged department from 2013, Since then concentrating on providing skill based activities to students. It offers M.A Life Skill Education from the academic year 2021-2022

- To act as a focal agency in the University system with Teaching, Research and Extension by providing community based activities to the students of the University departments and affiliated colleges.
- To offer need-based innovative Vocational Education and Skill-based Training Programmes.
- To foster all-round development of students in Teaching, Research and Extension activities to create lifelong learners.

The official representative body for all Department of Lifelong Learning students at Alagappa University is the Student Council, which is committed to resolving issues and enhancing the welfare of students. It actively participates in activities to improve the overall student experience, acting as a linkage between students and the university administration. The council encourages student involvement in departmental activities, enhances communication, and finds solutions to problems. It speaks with the administration, teachers, and parents on behalf of the students, serving as a channel for information sharing and resolving issues raised by the students. Additionally, by recognizing student contributions and offering suggestions for improving student life, the Student Council aids in the creation of educational projects. Each member, including the president and vice presidents, is responsible for particular tasks pertaining to coordination, feedback, and leadership.
