Genesis
The Department of Oceanography and Coastal Area Studies is the only one of its kind in Tamil Nadu and it was established in the year 1998 to cater to the requirement of manpower generation in the field of marine research, technology and industries. The Department is situated in a satellite campus extending over 13 acres at Thondi about 60 km away from the main campus. The Department is spread along the wave front having the facility of boat landing jetty. The Department has talented, motivated and well-trained staff members with expertise on multi-disciplinary aspects viz., Geological, Physical, Chemical and Biological Oceanography, Marine biotechnology, Marine microbiology, and Marine pharmacology. Our University is distinctly projecting Oceanography as the course admitting graduates from various disciplines so that the country will have skilled manpower to concentrate on the future requirements in the sphere of marine science and marine engineering. The department has published more than 250 research papers in SCI journals. The department has been nationally recognised by various funding agencies through the schemes such as UGC-SAP(Level I, Phase I 2016-2021and DST-FIST (Level I, Phase I 2018-2023).

I am glad to share my testimonial, reflecting on the profound gratitude I hold for the Department of Oceanography and Coastal Area Studies (OCAS). My passion for the deep blue waters and their captivating inhabitants, especially coral reefs, has been a lifelong pursuit. My journey into the depths of oceanic knowledge commenced at OCAS, a true beacon of enlightenment. As an MSc student of the first batch, I was fortunate to be guided by esteemed professors who imparted invaluable wisdom despite resource constraints. Beyond the classroom, our educational odyssey included frequent field trips, allowing us to actively contribute to the establishment of the marine museum. OCAS has not only deepened my understanding of the ocean's intricacies and the enchantment of coral reefs but has also catalyzed my personal growth. From a non-swimmer to an experienced SCUBA diver with over 2500 dives worldwide, my transformation is a testament to OCAS's profound impact on my academic and personal journey.Looking for to work with my university.

Mrs.Sathya Veeramani
(2003 -2006) batch of M.Sc.,M.phil., in Oceanography and Coastal Area Studies
This is sathya from Pudukottai,I completed my M.Sc.,M.phil., in Oceanography and coastal area studies (2003 -2006),here it gives me immense pleasure to give feed back about our department ,In marine science we study all aspects of ocean that’s why it’s. interdisciplinary,In the dept of oceanography and coastal area studies teaching method and qualifications of the faculties are good, well as one of the self financing universities, alagappa is best for the marine studies, have good lab facilities for students, good alumni networking, best hostel facilities in natural environment also often they conduct field work for the students to gain their practical knowledge ,the dept provides many schemes for the students to have the maximum opportunity for education so as a oceanographer am pridefully say we are fortuitous to have such an excellent environment for the marine science and coastal area studies. Thank you
